Feed Scarborough has made remarkable progress since its modest beginnings in 2020. What started as a small organization has now become an indispensable social service in Scarborough, particularly during the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic. With an unwavering commitment to combat food insecurity, Feed Scarborough has grown significantly, and has expanded their operations to include six food banks, a mobile healthy meal program, and three community gardens. Additionally, they run weekly educational initiatives and support a co-op student program, all made possible by the hard work of their staff, community donations, and the incredible efforts of volunteers.

The latest addition to their range of initiatives is the highly anticipated “Fresh Food Market” in the Golden Mile area. Situated at 772 Warden Avenue, near Eglinton Avenue East, this market fills a crucial void in an area that lacked adequate food support. Previously, residents had to travel long distances, often taking multiple buses, to access a food bank. Recognizing this need, Feed Scarborough strategically placed the market in the heart of the Golden Mile, just a short walk from the future Eglinton LRT. This convenient location ensures that community members can easily access fresh and affordable food options.

One of the standout features of the Fresh Food Market is its innovative use of repurposed shipping containers. These containers have been transformed into vibrant structures, adorned with colorful artwork, giving the market a unique and inviting ambiance. Not only does this reuse of shipping containers provide an eye-catching aesthetic, but it also contributes to sustainability efforts. By opting for this environmentally friendly construction method, Feed Scarborough reduces the use of traditional building materials that emit significant amounts of CO2. It’s a small but impactful step toward protecting our environment.

The Fresh Food Market is more than just a place to purchase groceries; it serves as a platform for local businesses to showcase their products. By featuring local artists, musicians and food vendors, Feed Scarborough strengthens the local economy and fosters a sense of community. Additionally, the market is actively seeking more grocery vendors, opening up opportunities for even more local businesses to participate. Among the exceptional vendors gracing the Fresh Food Market, there is a standout gem that was showcased on the opening day, known as Blessinglicious. This Nigerian street food vendor tantalizes taste buds with an enticing assortment of traditional Nigerian dishes.

The Fresh Food Market serves a greater purpose than just being another store. All proceeds generated from the market directly contribute to the operation of Feed Scarborough’s programs, such as their food banks. By shopping at the Fresh Food Market, you not only take care of your own needs but also support a noble cause that benefits the wider community. Furthermore, food bank users are offered discounted and reduced prices, ensuring that everyone has access to affordable and nutritious food.

The opening of the Fresh Food Market marks a shift in Feed Scarborough’s operations. Instead of the traditional food bank model, the market adopts a grocery store approach that empowers guests and restores their dignity. Visitors have the option to choose the food items they need and can pay using a preloaded “shopping card,” which can be used at the market or through an online portal. Groceries offered include all the basics such as fresh vegetables, fruits, dairy products, meat, and eggs.
