Work Integrated Learning

Integrating academic study with practical experience, the Work Integrated Learning (WIL) program empowers students to apply academic theories to real-world issues. WIL encourages students to challenge assumptions, refine ideas, and acquire the knowledge and experience necessary to emerge as the future leaders in environmental science for both undergraduate and graduate (MEnvSc, MSc, PhD) students.

Types of Work-Integrated Learning

Co-op is a paid work term that provides experience in a workplace setting related to students' field of study.

Students are provided with mentorship, workspace, and/or funding to engage in the early-stage development of business startups. Check out Genecis — a biotechnology company created by one of our very own MEnvSc student!

The Department of Physical and Environmental Sciences is actively engaged in cutting-edge research funded by national and international granting agencies. Our research spans laboratory and fieldwork projects, as well as theoretical and high-performance computing studies. A central mission of the department is to train highly qualified scientists.

Partnering with the Academic Advising and Career centre, the Department of Physical and Environmental Sciences offers many job shadowing opportunities. "In the Field" is a career exploration program involving a workplace tour that exposes students to the range of careers that can be found within an organization.

Competitive events like case competitions and hackathons involve teams collaborating on projects within a short timeframe, often spanning a weekend or a week. These events are often sponsored and judged by industry representatives who work with U of T staff, faculty, and students to co-develop a case based on a present-day industry challenge.  The Hub regularly hosts these competitions such as their EVolve Hackathon!

Work study offers paid, on campus employment in a format that allows students to apply their classroom learning in a practical setting.
