Course Name: Freaks and Geeks: Children in Contemporary Film and Media

Course Description: This course looks at the depiction of childhood and youth in contemporary film and television, especially focusing on films that feature exceptional, difficult, or magical children. It explores how popular culture represents children and teens, and how these films reflect cultural anxieties about parenting, childhood, technology, reproduction, disability and generational change. Throughout the course, students will encounter important, topical issues that shape modern filmmaking and contribute to ongoing cultural conversations.
