Program Overview

The Theatre and Performance program provides students with opportunities to investigate theatre and performance from multiple vantage points of performers, directors, designers, technicians, and scholars. Students in this program emerge as creative practitioners with a dynamic range of collaborative skills and as citizen-artists with a unique readiness to contribute to, and productively challenge, their society

Year 1
Choose Your Courses Wisely
  • Take THRA10H3 and THRA11H3. 

  • Consider taking some B-level courses, according to your interests.  (Many B-level courses do not have prerequisites.)  

  • Apply to the Theatre and Performance program after year 1. 

  • Meet with the ACM Program Manager to discuss course enrollment. 


Develop Your Academic & Research Skills
  • Visit the CTL Writing Centre to workshop your papers and enhance your writing skills. 

  • Visit professors’ office hours, asking how you can make the most of the learning opportunities in each class. 

  • A-level courses in TAP will introduce you to new ways of making theatre, to new tools for your growth as a performer, and to performances that will stretch your sense of what theatre can be.   


Apply Theory to Practice
  • Attend workshops and special events when offered. 

  • Consider auditioning for, or working backstage on, the program’s annual production (auditions and applications in October). 

  • Consider auditioning for, or working backstage on, a student-produced UTSC Drama Society production. 


Become an Engaged Citizen (Locally & Globally)
  • Enroll in the ACM Engage! Program, to participate and contribute to the arts beyond your classes. 

  • Follow the TAP program, the ACM department, and the UTSC Drama Society on social media, to be sure you get announcements about events and opportunities. 

  • Attend the TAP departmental production in March of each year. 

  • Attend theatre throughout Toronto. (Note many student discounts, and Soulpepper’s free tickets for young adults.) 


Plan for Your Future Career

Attending free professional workshops offered by the Department or the program about career developing in/beyond the arts 

If you’re interested in the Combined Degree program (to graduate with a master’s in teaching from OISE), meet with ACM Program Manager to signal your interest. 



Year 2
Choose Your Courses Wisely
  • Take B-level courses, across the program’s four areas of focus 

  • Consider taking 1-2 THRC-level courses, if possible

  • Ensure you’ll meet the prerequisites for the C- and D-level classes you’ll take next year. 

  • Use Degree Explorer to ensure you are on track with your degree 


Develop Your Academic & Research Skills
  • Visit the CTL Writing Centre to workshop your papers and enhance your writing skills. 

  • Visit professors’ office hours, asking how you can best develop your academic skills while exploring topics of interest to you 

  • B-level classes will broaden and deepen your understanding of theatre-making practices and possibilities.

  • Audition for, or work backstage on, the program’s annual production (auditions and applications in October). 

  • Audition for, or work backstage on, a student-produced Drama Society production.

  • Visit professors’ office hours, asking how you can make the most of the learning opportunities in each class. 

  • C- and D-level classes will challenge you to think critically, collaborate, write with precision, and create original work. 

  • Present your work at the annual ACM Research and Creative Practice Symposium

  • Attend the ACM Networking Night  

  • Attend the UTSC Professional & Graduate School Fair in September to explore graduate programs, and consider attending Open Houses. 



Year 4

  • If your schedule permits, consider taking some theatre classes at UTSG that are not offered at UTSC. 

  • Use Degree Explorer and meet with the ACM Program Manager to discuss program completion. 

  • Register your “Intent to Graduate” on ACORN by the deadline.
