An Exploration into Canada’s Governance - AA&CC’s Ottawa In the Field Experience

The University of Toronto Scarborough's Academic Advising & Career Centre (AA&CC) recently launched a pioneering initiative where a handpicked cohort of 20 students participated in an inaugural overnight experiential learning trip to Ottawa. This carefully organized journey sought to expand perspectives and enhance comprehension of governmental procedures. After registering through CLNX, participants were required to attend crucial workshops on preparedness and Indigenous matters.

The journey began in the morning, departing from campus to explore Canada's extensive history at the Canadian Museum of History. After completing their hotel check-in process with ease, the students were taken to Parliament Hill to attend an educational session about various aspects of government operations, led by Waleed Saleem, a UTSC Alumnus now serving as the Senior Regional Advisor at the Government of Canada Crown-Indigenous Relations. This experience provided an intellectual exploration and a valuable chance to connect with professionals in parliament, dispelling the misconception that political engagement is limited to Political Science students.

The initial day peaked with a buffet meal and an evening spent admiring the charm of Ottawa. The following day commenced with a stimulating excursion to the House of Commons, with a meeting with The Honourable Greg Fergus, Speaker of the House of Commons, who provided great perspectives on the legislative procedure. Subsequently, there was a networking panel and a visit to renowned locations such as the Centennial Flame. Additionally, there was an eagerly awaited Question Hour with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

The AA&CC's groundbreaking initiative clarified the Canadian government's inner workings for the students and built enduring professional relationships, making it an unmatched educational and career-enhancing undertaking. The excursion demonstrated that education goes beyond the confines of the classroom, establishing a basis for knowledgeable participation in society and a wide range of professional opportunities.
