Champions in Orillia

Your UTSC Women’s Hockey Team are champions!

The 2014-2015 Extramural Hockey tournament season began with the Georgian College Fall Faceoff in Orillia. Eight Ontario colleges were present at the tournament looking for the first tournament win of the season. It was the girls from Scarborough that came out victorious!

The morning began with a scrappy 2-1 shootout win over Humber College. In the second game, our girls found themselves down 2-0 early on against Fleming College but a 6-goal third period explosion gave them the 6-3 win. UTSC would earn a bye straight to the semi-finals where they would be matched up against Humber for the second time that day, defeating them 3-1. The championship game against Conestoga College was a 0-0 tie until mid-way through the third period when a wrap-around attempt just trickled over the goal-line. Our girls locked it down the rest of the way, winning the championship game 1-0.

It was a monumental and historic win for UTSC, who has never won an Extramural Tournament in Women’s Hockey before.

In 2008, the OCAA’s Ontario College Committee on Campus Recreation (OCCCR) created the Challenge Cup which features the top Ontario College men’s hockey teams. In 2012, the women’s hockey Challenge Cup was created. The UTSC Men’s Tri-Campus Team has qualified for all but one of these provincial championships. This season, with a tournament win already under their belt, our UTSC girls hope to qualify for the first time. They are off to a great start.

The next tournament for both teams is hosted by Humber College on November 20 and 21. By virtue of their win in Orillia, the UTSC Women’s Hockey Team enters the tournament as the top team in the province.

Good luck, ladies! We’re expecting big things from you this year.
