Biography

Professor McCrindle is an Associate Professor, Teaching Stream in the Department of Language Studies. She holds PhD and MA degrees in French Linguistics, both from the University of Toronto. She has also studied at York University and Carleton University, has taught in Brittany, France and was active in radio broadcasting for many years. She joined the University of Toronto Scarborough in 2000.

Since 2018, Professor McCrindle has been the Associate Dean Teaching & Learning and the Director of the Centre for Teaching & Learning (CTL). She has served in several leadership roles at U of T Scarborough including Program Supervisor, Journalism (2001-11), Associate Chair, Department of Humanities (2009-12), Interim Director of the Centre for French & Linguistics (CFL) 2012-13, followed by another five years as CFL Director from 2013 to 2018. She served as Acting Vice-Dean Teaching, Learning & Undergraduate Programs for several months in 2023-24.

Professor McCrindle has a deep commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion and experiential education. Her research has included verbal structures of Pidgin and Creole languages, implications and impact of multilingualism in Canada and the influence of media on language change. Her current research is focused on centering wellness in teaching and learning. She has extensive teaching experience across three disciplines (French, Journalism, and Linguistics), teaching a wide variety of courses including Semantics, Sociolinguistics of French, French Phonetics and Phonology, and Pidgin and Creole Languages. Professor McCrindle is the recipient of many teaching grants, and has a strong conference presentation record, especially in the areas of student engagement, hybrid learning, and managing microaggressions in the classroom.
