5Q - Desirée Leverenz, Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream, Theatre and Performance

Desiree Leverenz

What area(s) of scholarship are you most interested in?

i'm currently extremely interested in Land based dramaturgy, and i have so many questions guiding my journey. how can we be open enough to allow the Land to inform our artistic practices? how does that affect our work, both the process and the product? how can we hold the Knowledge of the Land with the same type of reverence that we often give to the english language.

How did you become interested in that area of scholarship?

i am forever curious how to create art sustainably: sustainable both for the Land, and for ourselves. how can we learn from the Land, to uphold anti-white supremist ideologies? this research feels vital to me. i don’t feel as if i chose this research, but rather my consciousness was awoken to it.

What course(s) will you be teaching this year?

this year i am teaching THRD31, THRC50 and THR B/C/D 55 & 56. in D31 we’ll be focussing on reimagining classics, where we will be investigating if it’s possible to view shakespeare from a decolonial lens. C50, 55 & 56 are all about creating a performance piece from an embodied place, rather than with words. we will be looking at creation stories from all over the world and building a theatre performance which we will be sharing with the public in the spring.

What are you looking forward to most about joining the U of T Scarborough community?

i'm excited to be in community with so many people at UTSC that want to dream big: students, staff, faculty, the rock walk, the blades of grass, the children-- all such big, big, dreamers.

What are you reading/watching right now?

the Sky has been putting on such an amazing show lately, i haven’t been able to stop watching it (i'm a double air sign, so i feel at home in the clouds).
