Professor Anne-Emanuelle Birn Awarded the Arthur J. Viseltear Prize for Lifetime Achievement in Public Health History

The OVPRI would like to congratulate Professor Anne-Emanuelle Birn of the Department of Global Development Studies and the Dalla Lana School of Public Health for being the recipient of the 2023 Arthur J. Viseltear Prize. This prestigious award recognizes her outstanding lifetime achievements in the field of public health history.

Presented annually at the American Public Health Association's meeting, the Viseltear Prize honors individuals for their remarkable contributions to the study of public health history. Established in memory of Arthur J. Viseltear, MPH, PhD, a former chair of the Medical Care Section and a historian at Yale University, the prize reflects a legacy of excellence in the field.

Selected by a committee comprising faculty from Columbia’s Sociomedical Sciences Center for History and Ethics of Public Health, Professor Birn has demonstrated exceptional dedication and expertise in advancing understanding of the historical dimensions of public health.
