If There is a Fire in Your Lab
- Stay calm.
- Activate the nearest pull station.
- Leave the area and close all doors behind you.
- Call Campus Safety at 416-978-2222 and give accurate and brief details of the emergency and your location.
- Leave the building by the nearest safe exit. Do not use elevators.
- Proceed to your nearest exit at a safe speed, closing the doors behind you. Do not run.
- Once outside the building, move away from the exits and stay clear of the area.
- Do not re-enter an evacuated building until authorized to do so by Campus Safety or other Emergency Personnel.
When You Hear the Fire Alarm
- Leave the building immediately by the nearest safe exit. Do not use elevators.
- Proceed to your nearest exit at a safe speed, closing the doors behind you. Do not run.
- Once outside the building, move away from the exits and stay clear of the area.
- Do not re-enter an evacuated building until authorized to do so by Campus Safety or other Emergency Personnel.
Fire Extinguishers in the labs
Every lab on campus will have a fire extinguisher located near the exit.
Do not use the fire extinguisher if:
- The fire is generating a substantial amount of smoke.
- The fire is in close proximity to other flammable or combustible materials.
- The fire is too large to extinguish with one extinguisher.
- The fire could cut off your exit.
- You are unsure about how to use the extinguisher.
If you choose to use a fire extinguisher:
- Only use the fire extinguisher on a small fire.
- If the fire is not extiguished with one fire extinguisher, do not try with a second extinguisher. Leave the area immediately.
