Captivate: UTSC's Digital Storytelling Competition

Captivate is UTSC's Digital Storytelling Competition and is made possible by the Sandford Borins Award in Digital Communications. It gives UTSC students the opportunity to create a short digital story—a video, podcast, website, or another format—that tells their story, and learn key skills that every industry professional and content creator needs to know.

Congratulations to the 2023 winners! Check out their creations below.

Coralie Rimaud- 1st place

Coralie's Submission

Coralie

Coralie is a fourth year international student at the University of Toronto Scarborough doing a major in Environmental Studies, and a double minor in Environmental Science and Statistics.

"All my life, I have been lucky enough to travel the world and to experience new cultures. Whether it would be living with my family, my friends or by myself, I would love to immerse myself in a new country. However, that comes with a price. The price of missing home. Being such a global citizen, I have never felt like I had a home to go back to. Having a home was not a concept in my life because for me, home was not a place but the people I love. Through this project, I wanted to share my perspective and my own take on homesickness. I hope you enjoy!"

Celeste Gutierrez- 2nd place

Celeste's Submission

celeste

"Hi! My name is Celeste Gutierrez and I am currently a third-year student in the Specialist Co-op International Development Studies program within the Global Development Studies Department. The title of my story is What is My Story?

Like any other 20 year old, I'm honestly not sure what the complete story of my life is...but who really does? What I know for certain is that I want to shape my story to be one of advocacy, to champion equity, justice, and sustainability for the generations to come. I hope to shape my story to help voice the narratives of the voiceless, those who do not have the opportunity to openly share their stories as easily as I can tell mine.

I may not currently understand how the pieces of the puzzle of my life will fit together, but I know that eventually, these pieces will amalgamate to illustrate the beautiful story of my life that is yet to come. This is my aspiration for crafting my story."

Tolulope Adegaye- 3rd place

Tolulope's Submission

tolulpe

Tolulope Adegaye is a Second Year Student who is in Human Biology and French Co-op, hoping to pursue a career in Medicine.

"Anxiety is a common emotion to have but dealing with anxiety in excess amounts can be a struggle. As I have grown older and surrounded myself with different people, I realized that life is what you shape it to be. Should I continue to deal with anxiety endlessly? No, because life is fleeting, and you can't let endless worry take over you as a person.

This video explains how I struggled with anxiety, but I was able to overcome it through life experiences and the people I surrounded myself with.

It's very important to be with people who will encourage you and help because it can go a long way. One key piece in my story that will forever resonate with me is:

No matter how intense the anxiety or worry is DO NOT LET IT CONQUER YOU."
