Simon in Malawi

Simon Dessie

Hello!

My name is Simon Dessie and I am a third year International Development specialist student at the University of Toronto Scarborough. I have been fortunate enough to get an opportunity to intern with a NGO called Ungweru based in Mzuzu, Malawi in partnership with Uniterra and World University Service of Canada (WUSC). This amazing opportunity was made possible by a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Scholarship.

Ungweru is a local non-governmental organization that works with disadvantaged communities in urban regions of Malawi on areas of Food Security, Child protection, Education, Natural Resource Management, HIV/AIDS Management, and Water and Sanitation. Ungweru also operates a Learning, Information and Communication Centre for the Youth and the community around.

I will be an intern as a Finance and Administration Officer, and hope to contribute to the objectives of Uniterra. I will be responsible for assessing, reviewing and providing recommendations to update the existing accounting system, in addition, to developing and conducting training to staff.

I aspire to contribute to the efforts of this organization through my internship and also broaden my understanding of development. This internship will expose me to the practical aspects of developmental work in an organizational setting and also to get to know the work done by different stakeholders in the development sector.

Cheers!
