My Placement Experience - Anna

Anna Khan in Malawi

My name is Anna Khan, and I had the opportunity to undertake a placement in Lilongwe, Malawi, where I collaborated with WUSC Canada and their partner organization, Timveni during my IDS co-op placement. With a dedication to youth education and development, I utilize my expertise and passion to enhance Timveni's programs for Malawian youth, striving to contribute to their growth and well-being to the best of my abilities. I was involved in various impactful projects during my placement, including Cyclone Freddy Relief efforts, where we coordinated aid for the community in Neno, Malawi. Another significant project was the Youth Hub, a collaboration with NGOs like GIZ, aimed at establishing an online employment opportunities hub for Malawian youth. This platform not only facilitated connections with potential employers but also offered workshops to enhance their soft skills for the workforce. Additionally, our team worked on advocating for a reproductive rights act to support vulnerable communities and their access to healthcare in the city through policy advocacy. We also organized social hubs to foster connections among the youth in Lilongwe and fundraised for programs on Timveni.

The most enriching aspect of my time was undeniably the vibrant community I found in Malawi, which became like a second family to me. I'm deeply grateful for the warmth and support extended to me by the people of Malawi. Exploring the diverse landscapes of Salima, Neno, Nkatabay, Blantyre, and Mangochi was an unforgettable experience, and I wholeheartedly encourage others to visit these remarkable cities. Although I missed out on Zomba, I'm eager to return and complete my exploration of this destination. This journey opened my eyes to the diverse lifestyles within a single country. It taught me that a true understanding of a nation comes from living and fully embracing its lifestyle and community.

After graduation, my aspirations are twofold: to persist in advancing educational opportunities for children, potentially by establishing my own NGO focused on empowering youth, and to delve into ESG consulting, aiding in the implementation of sustainable solutions and investments while concurrently fostering businesses to contribute positively to community development. Alongside these endeavors, I've found a newfound passion for video creation. I aim to leverage this medium to cultivate a platform aimed at reshaping perspectives on various countries, showcasing their realities authentically.

I am profoundly grateful to the IDS Board for granting me this extraordinary opportunity to immerse myself in the realm of International Development. Their support and funding enabled me to gain invaluable hands-on experience, preparing me for the challenges and rewards of real-world work. As I reflect on this transformative experience, I am filled with excitement for the next chapter of my career journey. I extend my heartfelt appreciation to the IDS team for their unwavering support and invaluable guidance throughout the years in the IDS program."
