Mariam in Sri Lanka

Mariam

Hi everyone! I am a rising fourth year student majoring in International Development and Women and Gender Studies. I will be working in Kandy, Sri Lanka this summer as a Communication and Soft Skills Officer with Women Development Centre (WDC).

I am humbled to volunteer for Uniterra, a joint program by WUSC and CECI to help empower women through education and employment. I wish to get into gendered development as a career. One of Uniterra’s goals is to enhance the income of poor and marginalized women and youth through better access to employment and income generation opportunities, which is what I am very passionate about. I believe with increased participation of these groups, economic growth can be better achieved. The WDC facilitates an environment for victimized women and youth and other vulnerable groups such as persons with special needs so that they participate more in decision making. My position entails teaching staff at WDC more about written and oral communication which includes business linkages, interpersonal skills and effective communication tools.

This will be my first time working in a new country and I am very excited to learn about Sri Lanka and to increase the participation of women and youth!
