'IDS’ in Canada- Seminar Series - Speaker Spotlight

On January 24th, 2019, from 5 to 7:00 pm, James Nugent, Lecturer in the Faculty of Environment at the University of Waterloo - and an IDS Coop Graduate! - will be speaking at our undergraduate speakers series on the theme of 'IDS in Canada'.Dr. Nugent will be addressing the theme of ' Building environmental justice in Canadian cities: Linking equity, poverty, jobs and sustainability through social movement coalition-building and community-based, participatory research.'. 

Event Description: How can we solve wicked problems such as climate change and urban congestion in ways that simultaneously create opportunities for addressing racialized poverty and gender discrimination? Massive investments are needed to expand public transit, generate renewable energy, and build new affordable public housing while energy retro-fitting old housing stock. This seminar discusses one way of tying these public investments to the creation of targeted economic opportunities for equity-seeking and historically disadvantaged groups through "community benefits agreements" (CBAs).  Dr. Nugent will discuss the success and limitations of a four-year community-based, participatory research project that helped bring together a coalition of labour, community and environmental groups to win Ontario's first-ever "community benefits agreement" (CBA) for the construction of the $6.6 billion Eglinton Crosstown Light Rail Transit (LRT) project in Toronto.

Speaker Spotlight: Dr. Nugent holds a Ph.D. in Geography and Planning from the University of Toronto (2017).  His academic interests and research publications are in the areas of political ecology; political economy and the environment; social movements and anti-poverty activism. As a graduate student, Dr. Nugent taught seven different courses at the University of Toronto in addition to holding a number of TA positions.
