Becky in Thailand

Becky

Hi my name is Becky and in less than two weeks I’ll be starting my 35 hours journey to Thailand to begin my 11 month placement with the Karen Human Rights Group (KHRG)!

KHRG is a grassroots organization comprised of local and expatriate staff, who together work to document the human rights violations taking place against the Karen ethnic minority population in rural Burma (Myanmar). I’m very excited and honoured to be doing my co-op with them as a Research Fellow, where my role will include editing interviews and human rights updates for an English-speaking audience, writing thematic reports of the human rights situation in Burma, as well as assisting with capacity building projects in the office.

I’m hopeful that I will be able to make a contribution to the great work KHRG does and learn about different frameworks of human rights in the process. I’m already learning so much just by doing my pre-departure readings and I know I’ll learn so much more just by living in Thailand and engaging with the current situation in Burma.

I’ve never been to Asia and so this is a completely new adventure I’m throwing myself into. Keep your fingers crossed for me!
