The nine-storey student residence located on Ellesmere Road, is expected to be completed by fall of 2023. It will be built to Passive house standard, showcasing U of T’s commitment to advanced sustainability and reducing our ecological footprint.
The building will include 750 beds with single and double occupancy, separated into unique communities, an integrated dining facility and server, mixed-use spaces for workshops style learning and lounges, and an outdoor roof garden and terrace.
In any year, the groundbreaking of a new building is a remarkable feat, and this is a year unlike any other. As the first virtual celebration of its kind in the history of the University of Toronto, it is certain to be one we remember. It is my pleasure to extend warmest congratulations as we mark a wonderful milestone at the University of Toronto Scarborough, and break ground on the new student residence building. As U of T Scarborough continues to grow, the addition of a residence building will not only enhance the student experience, but will foster a sense of community and provide a space where students can thrive. This cutting-edge building underscores the University’s commitment to sustainable, eco-efficient and healthy living, and will allow UTSC’s physical environment to match the quality of its world class education and flagship experience. I am honoured to join the Scarborough community in celebrating this new beginning. Congratulations one and all.

As the President of the Scarborough Campus Residents Council, I am excited that the University of Toronto has taken this bold, intuitive step to build a new student residence. I see this as a celebration and a triumph of vision, despite the challenges that the pandemic has presented, the University has remained undaunted. The resilient spirit of the University of Toronto is a celebration of the students of this great institution who will occupy the building on completion. If we must defeat the global challenges facing the human race, we must continue making significant investments and commitments to education.
This building is a testament to this commitment. Thank you!
