The Office of Ceremonies & Events is responsible for all aspects of the use of and the lowering of the Canadian and University flags on campus as required.
About the Lowering of the Flag
The University of Toronto Scarborough has three main flags in three locations on campus.
The Canadian flag is located atop of the science wing (SW), and is subject to specific protocol as dictated by the Canadian Government (Canadian Heritage).
The University of Toronto flags are situated in front of the Arts & Administration Building (AA), and the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre, and are subject to university protocol. On special occasions, the University of Toronto flag is replaced with other flags such as the Pride and Trans flags.
The Ceremonies Office arranges for the lowering of the flag for events such as the passing of a member of the campus community and occasions of national significance.
Effective April 23rd, 2020, all flag lowering announcements will be posted here. Notices will no longer be sent to campus via email.
All flags on the three campuses will be lowered to half-mast on Friday, April 26, 2024 to observe the National Day of Mourning for workers killed or injured on the job
All flags on the three campuses will be lowered to half-mast on Friday, April 26, 2024, returning to full staff the morning of Monday, April 29, 2024. The National Day of Mourning, officially recognized by the federal government in 1991, is held annually on April 28 in approximately 100 countries around the world and has been adopted by the AFL-CIO and the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions.
The University of Toronto will participate in this National Day of Mourning by lowering the flags in all locations across each campus, and through this act affirms its commitment to the promotion of health and safety for all members of the university community and to the provision of a safe and healthy work and study environment.

The University of Toronto flag will fly at half-mast on Monday, March 25, 2024, in memory of Professor Karen Dion. A distinguished and frequently published scholar, Professor Dion was a faculty member in Psychology at UTSC from 1970 until her retirement this past summer.
She is remembered for her many contributions to her department, her mentorship, sharp intellect, and generosity of spirit.

Flags (Canada, Ontario, U of T) on all three campuses will fly at half-mast commencing Friday, March 22, 2024, in memory of the Right Honourable Brian Mulroney
Flags on all three U of T campuses at will fly at half-mast in memory of the Right Honourable Brian Mulroney, P.C., C.C., G.O.Q., 18th Prime Minister of Canada, who passed away on February 29, 2024. To coincide with the State Funeral, taking place on Saturday, March 23, flags will be lowered on Friday, March 22, until the morning of Monday, March 25.

The University of Toronto flag will fly at half-mast on Wednesday, December 13, 2023, in memory of Steven Bonnar, who passed away on December 2, 2023. Steven worked in Engineering at UTSC since November 2022, and has been a staff member at the University of Toronto since 1997.

On Wednesday, December 6, 2023, from 12:30 to 2:30 pm, U of T will join communities across Canada for the National Day of Remembrance and Action for Violence Against Women (NDRAVAW) to honour the lives of the 14 women killed in a devastating act of misogyny at Montreal’s École Polytechnique in 1989.
In recognition of the occasion, all flags (Canada, Ontario, U of T) will be flown at half-mast.
