The Office of Ceremonies & Events is responsible for all aspects of the use of and the lowering of the Canadian and University flags on campus as required.
About the Lowering of the Flag
The University of Toronto Scarborough has three main flags in three locations on campus.
The Canadian flag is located atop of the science wing (SW), and is subject to specific protocol as dictated by the Canadian Government (Canadian Heritage).
The University of Toronto flags are situated in front of the Arts & Administration Building (AA), and the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre, and are subject to university protocol. On special occasions, the University of Toronto flag is replaced with other flags such as the Pride and Trans flags.
The Ceremonies Office arranges for the lowering of the flag for events such as the passing of a member of the campus community and occasions of national significance.
Effective April 23rd, 2020, all flag lowering announcements will be posted here. Notices will no longer be sent to campus via email.
All flags across the three campuses are at half-mast in honour of His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh, who passed away on April 9, 2021
All flags across the three campuses will be flown at half-mast from Wednesday, April 9, 2021 until sunset on the day of the funeral or memorial service of His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh.
Flags will be lowered to half-mast tomorrow, Thursday, March 11, 2021, across all three campuses, in recognition of the National Day of Observance for COVID-19
All flags on the three U of T campuses will be lowered to half-mast on the National Day of Observance to commemorate the people who lost their lives and the significant impacts we have all felt because of COVID-19.

University of Toronto flag at half-mast on Friday, February 26, 2021, in memory of Professor Waheed Hussain
The University of Toronto flag will fly at half-mast on the St. George and UTSC campuses on Friday, February 26, 2021, in memory of Professor Waheed Hussain, Department of Philosophy.
The UofT and UTSC communities have lost not only a valued faculty member and spellbinding teacher but also one of the most innovative contemporary thinkers at the intersection of politics, moral philosophy, and economics. Students and colleagues mourn a man of deep integrity, incisive thought, and a pointed sense of humour who was in the middle of producing some of his most brilliant work.

Flags (Canada, Ontario, U of T) on all three campuses will fly at half-mast tomorrow, Friday, February 19, 2021, in memory of Dr. Mark Tanz
Flags on all three U of T campuses will be lowered to half-mast Friday, February 19, 2021, in honour of Dr. Mark Tanz, University College alumnus, member of the Chancellor’s Circle of Benefactors, and honorary degree recipient.
Mark Tanz’s remarkable generosity was a catalyst that has accelerated research in Canada into neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. To read more, please click here.
Flags on the three campuses will be lowered to half-mast on Friday, January 8, 2021 in recognition of the National Day of Remembrance for Victims of Air Disasters.
In observance of the one year anniversary of the Ukrainian Airlines Flight 752 tragedy, on Friday, January 8, 2021, all flags on the three campuses will be lowered to half-mast. A recent federal order has proclaimed January 8th as the National Day of Remembrance for Victims of Air Disasters, to be observed annually on this date. More information can be found here.
U of T Student Life is hosting a virtual memorial for the victims of Flight PS752 on Sunday, January 10th, 2021. The memorial is a chance to join together and honour the memories of lives lost including students from the U of T community:
