A graduating student in the Department of Sociology will be heading to Harvard next fall.

Gabrielle Hunter, a double major in Sociology and Mental Health Studies, is graduating from UTSC this summer and will go on to study a Master of Science in Bioethics at the Harvard Medical School.

“Bioethics is about fairness and equity within the healthcare system,” says Gabrielle. “It’s about language barriers, the kind of hoops people have to go through to get insurance, get care, and healthcare is access during emergencies.” She is particularly excited about studying access to healthcare during emergencies such as pandemics globally, how countries were able to mobilize and develop vaccines and provide different types of care during the crisis.

After she completes her Masters, Gabrielle’s ambition is to go to medical school and specialize in Pediatrics.

Gabrielle thanked UTSC faculty such as Sociology’s Professor James Braun, and Professors Jessica Dere, Steve Joordens, and Robert Rozeske of Psychology, for their contributions to her success.

She also praised the community atmosphere at UTSC and the diverse and welcoming student body on campus. “The students themselves is what made my experience great at Scarborough, even if it was only a person I met once in the hall, or met this person for a semester,” she said. “UTSC does a good job bringing people together from different backgrounds together. Everyone I met was kind, or taught me something new. The student body is really special at Scarborough.”

The Department of Sociology congratulates Gabrielle on her achievement and wishes her all the best for her upcoming studies.
