Program Admission Requirements
UTSC French students will study both the structure and mechanics of the French language, and will also learn practical French for business and everyday use. Studies in French allow for a wide range of interests: French history and culture; the enhancement of practical language skills including translation; the study of how the language is structured and how it evolved and spread; the development of approaches to the teaching of French; and the exploration of the rich literature and cultures of the francophone world.

Linguistics is the study of language; it examines the construction of language and the mechanics of speech, and attempts to explain why language varies in humans. The program helps students to understand language components such as speech (sounds, phonetics and phonology), morphology of words, sentences (meanings, syntax and semantics), and the discourse of texts or conversations

Translation helps one to develop a deeper insight into two languages and is a great asset to one’s career. Designed for students who are fluent in both English and Chinese, English Chinese Translation allows them to gain the theoretical knowledge and practical skills required for the English to Chinese translation profession. Students in this program further explore different applications such as English to Chinese translation in business, media, government, and public administration.
