In its 10th year, Golf Day gets a makeover

A much-awaited, decade-long annual tradition, the 10th UTSC Golf Day, presented by EllisDon, was unique in many ways – which made it a swinging success. Held on June 7 at Deer Creek, Ajax, on a lovely summer day, the event had something exciting on offer for everyone, even those who don’t play golf.

While 32 teams of foursomes enjoyed their usual 18-hole rounds, they were also competing in a host of contests such as Longest Drive, Closest to the Hole and the Putting Competition. Those who came out on top got a chance to be applauded for their prowess on the course, and those who aspire to become great golfers themselves benefited from the expertise of the pros at Deer Creek.

32 people took a two-hour 'Learn to Golf' lesson and then got a chance to practice their swings on a 9-hole course. The whoops of their excitement at making holes could be heard all the way on the other side of the golf course, where, for the first time ever, a group of people got together to practice an hour of mindfulness and yoga against the lush greenery of Deer Creek. Led by alum Naraindra Prashad (BA 82 UTSC), the inaugural ‘Yoga in the Garden’ session saw participants stretched out on their new UTSC yoga mats as they were led through an hour of breathwork and yoga postures aimed at enhancing their overall sense of wellbeing.

To conclude the adventures of the day, all participants got together for the closing reception. Winners were also announced for the putting contest and the various other golfing prizes before all the happy and tired guests already started making plans to participate in the event again next year.

What also set this year apart was the inaugural Golf Day Online Auction – which helped UTSC raise over $6,900 dollars from 45 unique merchandise, items and experiences generously donated by the UTSC alumni and local business community.

Overall, the day raised over $46,000 dollars for Indigenous House.

We thank our participants, sponsors and donors for their support of Golf Day. We hope to see you on the greens again next year.
