October is Cyber Security Awareness Month

October is Cyber Security Awareness Month (CSAM) at U of T and the Information & Instructional Technology Services (IITS) team is pleased to collaborate with U of T’s Security Matters team to promote this initiative.

CSAM is an internationally recognized campaign held each October to inform people around the world of the importance of cyber security and to educate people on how to protect not only their work environment, but also themselves.

At its core, cyber security is the practice of preventing cyberattacks - an unauthorized person seeking access to change, or destroy private information and using it for social, political or financial gain. This can be achieved in various ways including ransomware, malware, social engineering, and phishing emails.

As part of a continued effort to support the UTSC community, IITS offers services like VPNs, antivirus software, secure data backup, mobile and software updates, and disk encryption. For more information about IITS security services, please contact the service desk: helpdesk@utsc.utoronto.ca.

In addition to the services provided by IITS, the U of T Security Matters team has a library of blogs, tip sheets, policies and procedures and other resources to help you keep your information secure. On October 22, the Security Matters CSAM booth will be coming to UTSC to chat about how to practice information security in the office, classroom, academic spaces, and at home. Stop by to play games, win prizes, and take home some educational resources.
