Computer Backups - OneDrive

Data stored on IITS-managed staff and faculty computers is backed up using a program called CrashPlan. CrashPlan transfers, on the background, a copy of files and folders to back up servers hosted in UTSC Data Centre. Data backup ensures that data can be recovered in the event of hardware failure, accidental deletion or ransomware attack. Unfortunately, CrashPlan will end of life this Fall and will stop working. To ensure continued protection of data stored on managed Windows and Mac devices, data must be moved to Microsoft OneDrive cloud. OneDrive supports automatic synching of files to OneDrive cloud storage and enables users to restore deleted files and restoring to a previous file version. Every faculty, staff and student has access to 1TB OneDrive space as part of the University Microsoft Office365 (M365) subscription. M365 also hosts other key applications like Email, Teams and Share point. OneDrive is secure and has been approved as recovery tool against ransomware. 

What do I need to do?

IITS will be contacting users in the next few weeks asking them to book a short appointment with IITS Service Desk to move their data to OneDrive and ensure ongoing synchronization with OneDrive cloud storage. Without this step, user data will be at risk of loss should something wrong happens.
