UTSC has a deep tennis tradition, with strong participation from students, staff, faculty and the community and as the home of Varsity Blues Tennis. Popular youth programs give UTSC students opportunities for experiential learning and teaching certification. UTSC hosts a number of tournaments each year, including Tennis Canada National Qualifiers and ten Ontario Tennis Association tournaments.
A new, fully accessible tennis facility, with eight courts including a stadium court with seating for 250, will open in spring 2015 as the site for the Parapan tennis competition August 7 -15, 2015. The new tennis facility has been designed to meet or exceed International Tennis Federation standards and barrier-free guidelines.
Jointly funded by UTSC and the Government of Canada, this legacy project will host Wheelchair Tennis high performance training for Ontario, and enhance community participation and student intramurals, teaching, coaching and play. As part of the TO2015 Parapan legacy, the new tennis facility will enhance the significant impact of the Henry Norrington program, a community partnership that introduces tennis to youth in the nearby neighbourhood improvement area.
