Policies

The CNS provides access to equipment and training services to members of the facility and external users on a user-cost basis and according to our policies and regulations.

All users must first complete all appropriate safety training:

Any animal related work must first be approved by the UTSC vivarium staff.

UTSC users are required to utilize our equipment booking system.

External uses may contact us directly to reserve training and equipment time.

Mandatory training by CNS staff is required for all users prior to the utilization of any equipment. Users are NOT permitted to train other new users.

Spinning Disk
 

The maximum length of time slot is 3 hours. Please use these time slots for both weekday and weekends: 8-11am, 11-2pm, 2-5pm, 5-8pm, 8-overnight. It’s OK to book for less than 3 hours only, but please do not book multiple hours across 2 slots.
The maximum number of slots within a week will be 3.
The maximum number of active booking is 6.
Advanced booking can be made up to 6 months before the scheduled time.

Should you have specific needs because of experimental designs etc. to book outside of these rules, please contact CNS staff to discuss.

In case of any cancelation of booking, you MUST email or call Bruno (416-287-5625) and email all users (cns-users@utsc.utoronto.ca). Failure to comply will mean losing confocal privileges.

Only individuals trained personally by Bruno are allowed to use the spinning disk confocal.

Data should be removed from the computer as soon as possible. Files that are older than 1 month can be removed without warning.

Room SW229B operates under level II biosafety rules: no food or drink in the room, no gloves on the knobs and keyboard, lab coats are mandatory.

Do not apply too much immersion oil. Oil must be cleaned up thoroughly at the end of each session with ethanol or isopropanol.

Please keep the room clean. Do not remove any item without letting CNS staff know.

If you want to "borrow" the Volocity dongle, you must let CNS staff know and leave a note by the spinning disk with your name and phone number and when you will return it. Please return it immediately after activating your computer.

Laser Scanning Confocal

Please respect the 30 minute rule with the mercury arc lamp. Do not turn on the lamp while it is still hot. Wait at least 30 minutes to let it cool down completely before turning it on.

Room SW235F operates under level II biosafety rules: no food or drink in the room, no gloves on the knobs and keyboard, lab coats are mandatory.

Microscope must be cleaned up thoroughly at the end of each session.
