Meet the newest curator at the Doris McCarthy Gallery, alumna Sandy Saad-Smith

Sandy Saad-Smith (HBA 2009 UTSC, MA 2011) became the new curator at the Doris McCarthy Gallery (DMG) this past September. In short order, she launched her first show, Now You See Me, which runs until June 5th.

“As a curator and someone who comes from the Scarborough community, I want our exhibitions to reflect our diverse students and wider Scarborough community. Now You See Me is part of the CONTACT Photography Festival and brings together artists who consider the power dynamics of image-making. Some of the artists expose ways historical photographs have marginalized communities, while others become directors of their own images to create space for new narratives and realities.”

Tell us a bit about yourself. Who are you?

I’m an art lover. I enjoy being creative and connecting with people through art. I’m also a dark chocolate lover. I make chocolates and gift them to friends and family. I’m the curator at the Doris McCarthy Gallery at UTSC. This means that I get to work on developing exhibitions for the gallery. I also get to work with artists on various residencies and projects to create engaging programs for the students and wider Scarborough community.

How long have you worked for UTSC/UofT?

Fun fact: I worked for the DMG 15 years ago as a work-study student. The DMG was the first gallery that gave me a job and a chance to understand what it was like to work in the art community. After I graduated, I went on to do my MA and worked in various other places. I recently came back as curator in September 2021. It feels like a homecoming

Best part of the job?

Meeting artists, seeing the world from a different perspective, always learning something new. Being able to share experiences with gallery visitors and our community.

Top reason you love UTSC?

It feels like home. I spent many years at UTSC as a student. I have great memories here and I now get to make new memories through my work at the DMG. I also get facilitated meaningful experiences for our students similar to the ones I had. It’s an incredible privilege.

Fave spot on campus?

The Valley.

Best food in town?

Federick Restaurant – was a go to as a student and is a nostalgic treat. Also, shout out to Crown Pastries!

What you’d do if you won the lottery?

Take my whole family on an extravagant trip to somewhere warm. We’d lounge by the beach, make memories and sleep in to our hearts content. I would also buy lots and lots of art.

Fave / Coolest spot in the GTA?

Jurassic Park on a Raptor’s game night. I’m a huge basketball fan!

Now You See Me runs until June 25 at the Doris McCarthy Gallery at UTSC.
