THE UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO AND CHINESE EDUCATORS TO COLLABORATE AT THE FEMINIST PEDAGOGY INSTITUTE

From July 15 – 26, 2002 a group of professors, community members and educators from the University of Toronto and various institutions of higher education from across China are gathering for an innovative Summer Institute on Feminist Pedagogy and Women’s Studies curricular development.
The goal of the institute is to develop collaborative research initiatives in feminist pedagogy as well as to establish a partnership between educators in China and in Canada. Feminist scholars at the University of Toronto will share their experiences in teaching and developing women’s studies programs with the Chinese workshop participants. The delegates will exchange joint research proposals on the teaching and learning methods of Women’s Studies in higher education within China and Canada creating a multimedia resource guide and supporting web site.
This initiative is based upon years of fruitful collaboration between feminist scholars at the University of Toronto and several major universities in China. Professor Ping-Chun Hsiung of the University of Toronto and Professor Du Fangqin of Tianjin Normal University are co-directors of the Summer Institute.
The Institute of Women’s Studies and Gender Studies (IWSGS) at the University of Toronto is the key partner of the Summer Institute, providing the background knowledge and expertise of their facilitators, while the Centre for Instructional Technology Development (CITD) at the University of Toronto at Scarborough (UTSC) will be coordinating local events and producing resource materials.
