April 7, 05 update:

This term will soon coming to an end. I am working on my final storyboard for the 2nd and 3rd video. I am going to do my first video editing this weekend at centennial collage. I will probably have the first and second video completed by next Tuesday. Will you be in your office on Tuesday or Wednesday? May I drop by at your convenience? Thx.

March 20 Update

March 20, 05 Update

I went to work at Centennial yesterday and they have Final Cut Express. So I
think I will go there to edit my video in these coming weeks.

I've also drafted the second and third storyboard. However, I need to take
More time for editing on the first video because I have many assignments and
projects that are due this week and the week after.

March 6 - 9 Updates

The below are my pass updates:

March 6, 05
As I said before, I will break down my work in no specific no order (not
restricted by the time frame of pass, now and future). Here is my new concept. I will make each film shorter but they will be in 5 videos instead of 3 (probably 3 mins each). I think 10 mins is too long and I do not want to lose the audiences' attention span.
Below are the 5 new categories.
1. Self
2. Other Side of Myself
3. Re-Discovering Myself
4. Challenging Myself
5. Potential Self

March 8, 05
I worked on the storyboard for the 5 categories; however, I found that
there weren't enough information for each video. Often times, they are too distant and different. It is hard to link them
with their similarities. Therefore, I came up with a new idea, which will combine the first and second idea. Here is the final category, which I would like to focus on:
1. Self (All about myself, my personality, my likes, dislikes; this will
allow me to look deeper into myself)
2. Re (I love to use Re for my works' title, such as, *Re-, Relief, Remix,
etc)
3. Unknown (This is my future potential, or the other side of myself)

March 9, 05
I've finished the first story board (Myself). It will included my cocktail
video, DaDucSiu performance and shadow performance. I found out that I
love to use water, eggs and black paint in my video or performances.
Therefore, you will see these elements in my final work.
These elements also act as a link between these three projects. I will not
tell the story in a linear way; instead, I will cut each project into
different parts and try to link them together again.

I've changed my idea in regards to the interview and I will use a different
way to present them. For example, caption or text, voice over, question first and
answer in few scenes later, etc. instead of just an ordinary interview -question and answer.

about interview dialogue

My friends and I communicate in Cantonese and I think I will be a lot more comfortable speaking in Cantonese in the video. The Chinese language can relate back to my place of origin and cultural background which can reflect personal perspective and interpretation. However, like you've mention, most of my works were done in Canada, I will try to include some English speaking friends to have input. This will make the questions more evenly-distributed and less bias. Since this project is called "REMIX", it would make sense to have different elements within the project. My original idea did not involve my friends to speak, I think it will be a good idea to include them (maybe in some part or just voice over).

Did u receive my final proposal and emails last week? I’ve rearranged some of the scene for my storyboard. Actually, I am not good in drawing storyboard. It’s hard for me to just think and draw. I can bring some of my previous works to show too. Will you be there on Thursday or Friday and what time? I am ok in the morning this Thursday but not Wednesday.

March 5 Update

Below are 20 questions which I might include in my interview. Not all of the questions are straight forward questions (i.e. “ How I see Art”). However, they are asked from various different perspective, which can reflect my work. The audience can think about my work in depth from different angles. The questions can also function as links or transitions between senses or works. I didn’t set up all the questions as I will start by asking 3 of my friends to ask me questions so that i can see what kind of things they would like to know about me. I will answer the questions in my mother language (Cantonese).

Questions:

1. How would you describe "Kendy Chan" as a performance artist?

2. To want extent you feel happy and unhappy with "Kendy Chan"?

3. If you got the chance to change/ improve one thing of "Kendy Chan", what would it be? Why?

4. "Adventurous" and "Steady", which word would you choose? Why?

5. In front of you, there is a glass filled with 1/2 water. Would you see it as "Half full" or "Half empty"? Why?

6. What would you do to release your negative feelings?

7. Tell one thing you treasure most.

8. Would you see difficulties as "Challenge" or "Obstacle"? Why?

9. Tell one thing you hate most.

10. If time recedes, would you go the same way? Why?

11. "Lightness" and "Darkness", what would you choose? Why?

12. How do you see natural disaster?

13. Being distinguish but painful, or being mediocre but happy, which do you prefer?

14. Do you go your own way, or follow others' footstep?

Feb 27, 05 update

I've selected and highlighted my previous work, which I wanted to include in
my video. I've transformed most of them (e.g. sketching works, paintings, drawings and
sculptures) into digital format by scanning and taking pictures of the
images.  I think I am not going to put any commercial designs such as
posters, banner, etc. into the project because it doesn't really relate to
fine arts.

I've looked at my previous footage once again. I think I can include
some NG footage. (e.g. those footages which I didn't put in the final video
for the electronic media project) because I think it will be fun to look at.

I've produced some new footages which I am still thinking whether I should
put into the video. I've been trying different angles shoots and techniques to
shoot. The interview script is still in progress. I will probably have my interview shot by next
week.

We can meet on Thursday to talk about my storyboard. I've done my final
proposal and I will bring a hard copy to our meeting on Thursday.

Feb 13 05 Update

I’ve tried to organize my old work last week. From the foundation course till now, I’ve got various kinds of artwork such as sketching, ideas and basic material from my foundation year. Paintings, drawings and sculptures from my B level courses. Websites, videos, animations and graphics works from my New Media program. Performances, abstract Photographs and Photogram from my C and D level courses.

Since my works are quite different and ranges in various formats, the hardest thing for the storyboard is to find a way to link or group all these works together. I am working on drafting and brainstorm at the moment to try to link my old work with their similarities. (e.g. color, shape, form, media etc)

My first draft storyboard will be completed during this reading week.

On the other hand, I am also looking into some montage artists. I know a few pioneer artist who started montage; however, their movies are mostly in Black and White and their style is quite old. Therefore, I still continue to look for some contemporary montage artists such as Peter Compus and Wong Kar Wai.

I will hand in my final proposal one week after reading week.
