On October 11, 2019, Prof. William Gough and Ana Žaknić-Ćatović  (PhD Candidate) presented their research at the climate workshop organized by the College of Environmental Science and Engineering of Tongji University in Shanghai, China.

Bill introduced the University of Toronto and presented the Detection of Fog, Cloud Cover and Marine Environments, and Ana presented the Impact of Climatological Observing Window on the Determination of Daily Extrema.

On October 14-16, 2019, Prof. William Gough, Ana Žaknić-Ćatović  (PhD Candidate), Prof. Monirul Mirza, and Benny Xie  (PhD Student) presented their research at the International Workshop on Watershed Environmental Management and Protection held at Hohai University in Nanjing, China.

First, Bill introduced the University of Toronto at the Opening Ceremony and presented Lake Ontario Ice Cover: Past Present and Future. Second, Monirul presented Climate Change and Water. Third, Ana presented the Hybrid Degree-Day Algorithm for an Improved Snowmelt Estimation. Lastly, Benny presented Lake Ice Phenology in Lake-Climate Integration of the Great Lakes Region.

The workshop was followed by the field trip to Lake Taihu and the Taihu Laboratory for Lake Ecosystem Research. During the field trip, Monirul wrote a beautiful poem inspired by the spectacular view of the lake:

Lake Taihu

Monirul Mirza
The sun starts setting on the lake covered by twilight cloud
Birds returns to their nests sounding loud
A strange darkness coming down on the lake's far side
It is running fast to me like the waves of a tide.

I am waiting to see a glimpse of the full moon
Soft moonlit shall cover the lake very soon
A restless lonely bird wanders in the sky
Looking for her lost partner but eventually will go fly.

On the Lake I am also lonely and alone
The strange darkness ends, and the night is gone
Sun rises and sets everyday on the Lake's shore
I found my love with Lake Taihu and the loneliness is no more.
