The interviews in this guide were selected from a larger set of data on the Family Demography of Immigrant Groups in Canada. They were conducted in 1993 by graduate student researchers at the University of Toronto under the direction of the principal investigator, Dr. Nancy Howell. The original project received funding from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council, and was approved by the Ethical Review Unit of the University of Toronto. In 2001 Dr. Howell kindly contributed the data for instructional use in the present project.

Dr. Mary-Beth Raddon has made significant contributions to data preparation and manuscript production. She has cleaned up and anonymized the data set, and selected 37 transcripts as suitable for the Guide. She independently carried out the open and focused coding, drafted the student research paper, and commented on and revised the draft. I have enjoyed the stimulating conversations we have had throughout the process. Without her dedication and intellectual input this project would not have come to fruition.

I would also like to express my gratitude to Dr. Nancy Howell and the graduate student interviewers for their work of interviewing and transcribing the data. I am also grateful to Gajenthini Selvarajah for her very capable research assistance. Anne Wu, Fatima Lee and Benson Tan provided valuable comments.

The project was made possible by a grant from the University of Toronto for development of instructional courseware.

Leslie Chan has taken an interest in this project from its inception. His expertise in and passion for e-learning and scholarly e-publishing have made all the difference at the final stage of this project’s production.

Dr. Joan Eakin has provided much inspiration in my qualitative inquiry pursuits. Under her and Dr. Denise Gastaldo’s leadership, the Centre for Critical Qualitative Health Research at the University of Toronto has been my intellectual harbour. The discussions we have had over the years have been extremely rewarding. I’m particularly grateful for the Centre’s financial support, which has covered the last stage of this project’s production.

Senning Luk turned the manuscript into its current digital form. I am thrilled to see such a technological transformation, because it makes the Guide accessible to a much wider intellectual community.
