Languages

U of T Scarborough offers language courses in French, Mandarin Chinese, Hindi and Japanese . We have a vibrant international community of students from across Canada and from around the world, and our students have an exciting range of opportunities to learn languages in both formal and informal settings. An interconnected global economy has made knowledge of languages more important than ever, and language proficiency is indispensable for students seeking international study, work opportunities in Canada and abroad, and post-graduate study.

Linguistics

Linguistics is the scientific study of human language. It encompasses theories of linguistic structure in all domains: speech sounds (phonetics and phonology), words (morphology), sentences (syntax), meaning (semantics and pragmatics), and texts or conversations (discourse). Subfields of linguistics include sociolinguistics (language variation according to region, gender, class, etc., as well as the social functions of language); psycholinguistics (language acquisition and processing, and language disorders); historical linguistics (language change across time); and applied linguistics (e.g. second language learning, clinical linguistics).
