In keeping with Doris McCarthy’s generous spirit, her Estate has recently offered the DMG two paintings for the purpose of fundraising. McCarthy's Fresh Snow at Coleman (1995) and The Hero of Sarteano #2 (2000) will be auctioned, with proceeds to benefit the DMG’s Art Acquisitions budget. McCarthy actively supported growth of the DMG Collection and particularly encouraged the purchase of works by young Canadian artists. The application of funds raised by this auction will stay true to her wishes.
The auction runs February 26 - April 26, 2014, with the bid form accessed online. Current bids are updated daily. Works may be viewed in person at the Doris McCarthy Gallery.
Please note: this auction is now closed.
Fresh Snow at Coleman
Oil on board
30.5 x 40.6 cm
During sketching trips, McCarthy often turned her attention to the homes of her hosts or their neighbours. She was particularly attracted to brightly coloured constructs that stood out in the landscape, much like the little, yellow home at centre. The small panel would have been completed as a plein air sketch; one can imagine how McCarthy’s fondness for winter scenes would have made her rush to capture the newly fallen snow.
The Hero of Sarteano #2
Watercolour on paper
38.1 x 55.9 cm
Numerous instances of McCarthy’s interest in statuary appear throughout her European works. A spring trip to the Tuscany region of Italy led McCarthy to the small community of Sarteano. Arnaldo Zocchi’s Monumento ai Caduti (A Monument to the Fallen) stands resigned in the central square, a modern war memorial amid the sunny, medieval landscape that surrounds it.
