The Language Monitor Centre offers free, one-to-one instruction to improve students’ proficiency in various subjects of language. Our goal is to help students meet their academic potential and even exceed academic expectations. We help students with assignments, vocabulary, grammar, writing, reading, pronunciation, and many more. The Language Monitor Center is located on the third floor of the Social Sciences Building, MW391.

The following teaching assistant positions are available in the Department of Language Studies (formerly Centre for French and Linguistics) at the University of Toronto Scarborough for the Summer 2023 academic session. The jobs are posted in accordance with the Collective Agreement between The Governing Council of the University of Toronto and the Canadian Union of Public Employees, Local 3902 (Unit 1).

In accordance with the currentCUPE3902 collective agreement, the rate of pay applicable for T.A. classifications UG/SGSI/SGSII will be: $51.93 per hour plus 4% vacation pay. Please note that should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduate degree (in progress) in French; Native to near native proficiency in French. Good communication skills. Experience as a language lab monitor or language cafes will be considered an asset.

Experience as a language lab monitor or language cafes will be considered an asset.

Relevant Criterion

Previous experience is the more relevant criterion than the need to acquire experience in respect of this posted position.

Duties

Provide one-on-one or group support to students in beginning and intermediate French courses. The duties of this position include:
• helping beginning and intermediate students practice their French pronunciation, develop their speaking skills, understand essential grammatical concepts and improve their vocabulary;
• guiding informal and formal conversations in French to help intermediate students improve their spontaneous interactions in French;
• reviewing material learned in class and helping students with questions about grammar and syntax;

Provide 1 hour/ week availability. Duties are completed in-person at UTSC from May 2024 - August 2024.
