Is TYP@UTSC for me?

Is TYP @ UTSC for me?

The Transitional Year Program at U of T Scarborough will not be accepting applications for September 2024. We will be revisiting and reflecting on the program during this time. Updates will be posted here as they become available.

If you were interested in applying to our program, we strongly recommend you consider the Transitional Year Programme at U of T St. George. For more information, please see their website: https://typ.utoronto.ca/

Our goal at the Transitional Year Program (TYP@UTSC) is to make degree-level studies accessible to students who would otherwise be excluded from university.

We actively recruit Black Students, Indigenous students, students from LGBTQ2+ communities, sole-support parents, persons with disabilities, and individuals from working-class backgrounds of all ethnicities and communities who have experienced barriers to education.

TYP@UTSC might be a good fit for you if:

  • You have faced barriers in your educational journey
  • You are missing some high school credits or your high school grades fall short of university admission requirements
  • You feel like you would thrive in a supportive academic environment
  • You are motivated to pursue university-level studies

Requirements

We consider each application individually, taking into account the barriers you’ve experienced, your motivation, and your existing academic skills – whether these come from formal schooling or experience. Admission to the TYP@UTSC is based on the applicant’s needs and their compatibility with the supports offered by our program.

You should meet most or all of these general eligibility requirements:

  • Be at least 18 by September 30 of the year of admission
  • Be a Canadian citizen, Permanent Resident or a Protected Person (i.e., a refugee)*
  • Have experienced barriers in your education relating to social or economic difficulties, illness, or other reasons beyond your control
  • Have completed at least some high school at the Ontario Grade 11 level (or equivalent) or higher. If you have completed fewer than three Grade 11 credits, we may offer you deferred admission and refer you to an appropriate academic upgrading program
  • Do not meet the University of Toronto’s regular standards for admission consideration

*At this time, the TYP@UTSC cannot admit International students.

If you don’t meet most or all of these requirements but feel that TYP@UTSC is the right fit for you, go ahead and apply and we will contact you for a follow up discussion.

Please note that meeting the requirement above does not guarantee admission. We will review your application carefully, and engage with you to discuss other possible pathways in case TYP@UTSC is not the most appropriate program for you.
