UTSC Sociology PhD candidate wins TA prize

Paul Nelson

UTSC Sociology PhD candidate Paul Nelson has been awarded the 2022 UTSC Graduate Teaching Assistant Award in recognition of his outstanding work in SOCA03 - Introduction to Sociology.

“Since 2016, Paul has distinguished himself through the rapport he is able to build with students,” said Professor Kathy Liddle. “Particularly prioritizing support for English language learners and for those students who face barriers to their education. Backstage, his administrative skills have been vital to keeping this complex course on track, whether responding to student concerns, leading benchmarking sessions for the TA team, or troubleshooting technical issues. Paul was also instrumental in the redesign of SOCA03 for online delivery, providing valuable support and ideas.”

"I am deeply moved and grateful for this recognition by the University and thankful to the professors and the students who supported my nomination,” said Paul. “It is my honour to represent our department at this year’s UTSC Teaching Awards. Thank you to the professors and course instructors who allowed me the chance to develop teaching skills in their classes. In particular, I am indebted to Kathy Liddle for the opportunities that she provided to me over the past few years and for her invaluable mentorship. The evolution of my teaching philosophy and pedagogy has been greatly influenced by learning under her excellent tutelage."
