PURPOSE OF JOINING

What should I consider joining UTSC Psi Chi?

Psi Chi is not only an opportunity for your academic excellence to be recognized and celebrated, but it is also a mechanism by which you may pursue other valuable professional development opportunities (e.g., financial awards, opportunities to publish and network). For a more comprehensive treatment of the benefits, please refer to the Psi Chi benefits webpage

MEMBERSHIP REQUIREMENTS, APPLICATION PROCESS

What are the requirements to become a member of UTSC Psi Chi?

Please see this page.

I believe that I meet all of the requirements detailed on the website. How do I apply for membership?

Please see this page.

I’ve submitted my application for membership through the Psi Chi website. What happens now?

Applications are processed once per term on the schedule provided here.  You will be contacted shortly after the deadline whether your application is successful or not.

My application for membership has been approved. What do I do next?

You will receive an email from a faculty adviser detailing the necessary steps to complete your membership. Please pay careful attention to those requirements.

Why do I have to pay a membership fee of $55 USD?

This is a one-time membership fee for lifetime membership into the society. These funds are used to subsidize student financial awards, the other various professional developmental opportunities offered by the society, and central administration. To ensure that membership is as affordable as possible, none of the funds are kept by the UTSC Chapter of Psi Chi.

What is the annual induction ceremony, and why should I consider going?

The annual induction ceremony is a valuable opportunity for the year’s new members to congregate and celebrate their academic achievements with the Department of Psychology. While your participation is not mandatory, we strongly encourage you to prioritize attending.

MEMBERSHIP ELIGIBILITY ISSUES

I’m a UTSC Alumnus…why can’t I join the chapter at this time?

After successfully launching our chapter for current students, we will explore this possibility and update the website accordingly.

I’m a UTSG or UTM student. Why can’t I join this chapter of Psi Chi?

Although we exist in a unique tri-campus system, students are only able to join Psi Chi through their primary university (i.e., UTSC students join at UTSC’s chapter). Students at UTSG and UTM should talk with their undergraduate department about the possibility of founding a chapter.

Why am I required to take a minimum of 2.5 credits only at UTSC to be eligible for membership?

This requirement from Psi Chi exists to ensure that all students take the same minimum number of courses all at the home institution. Trying to include courses from other institutions may create an uneven playing field for evaluating membership criteria, hence it is not allowed.

My program GPA is above the cutoff but my cumulative GPA isn’t. Can you make an exception for me?

This is an international requirement and cannot be waived under any circumstances. If you do not meet the requirement at this time, you should consider applying when you meet or exceed it.

UTILITY OF YOUR MEMBERSHIP AFTER GRADUATING FROM UTSC

Is my membership only useful to me while I’m an undergraduate?

NO! There are a variety of funding and professional development options available for graduate students and even faculty!

Do I have to join again if I happen to go to graduate school in Psychology?

You will be able to transfer your membership to any other university that also has a Psi Chi chapter. In the event that your new institution does not have a chapter of Psi Chi, perhaps you should consider helping them create one…
