Location:

Maryam Suta lies northeast of Ḥawzen Town in a low valley on the Ḥawzen plain. The new church is carved into the west face of a small rock outcrop, just south of the built church and within the same compound.

Church Description:

(by Tarn Philipp)

The church is said to have been started some ten years ago, but remains in the early phase of excavation. While rock has been removed to form the area in front of the church and set out the façade, the church itself is yet to be carved. Only a central arched entrance has been partially excavated. A large arch is engraved on either side of the central entrance and may later form window or door openings to the church. The central entrance includes an engraved cross above. Excavation is on hold due to insufficient funds. If the church is ever to be completed, this will likely be several years from now.

Getting There:

The church is a fifteen-minute drive north of the roundabout in Ḥawzen Town (past the hospital). The turnoff (un-signposted) is to the left of the road and descends slightly to arrive at the church compound, which is hidden on approach.
