Facts & Figures Report

Facts & Figures is an annual publication created by the University of Toronto, that provides answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about U of T.

Performance Indicators

An annual Performance Indicators Report has been presented to the University of Toronto Governing Council since 1998. The University continues to be a leader in the post-secondary sector in Ontario in providing reports of this nature as part of our accountability to governance. The indicators in these reports have changed over the years as we have expanded the scope of areas that we have sought to measure, have enhanced our data collection and created partnerships with other institutions and agencies that allow for external benchmarking.

Graduation, Employment and OSAP Loan Default Rates

In response to the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities (MTCU) 1998-1999 OSAP policy requirement that institutions make available for students' data regarding default rates, graduation rates and graduate placement rates, the University of Toronto is posting the three “OSAP Indicators”. Graduation and default rates have been calculated by the MTCU using existing data sources while employment rate data was collected through a graduate survey conducted by CCI Research Inc. on behalf of the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities (MTCU).

Reports and Accountability

The University of Toronto reports annually on the progress of our strategic activities in relation to all levels of government, other public sector institutions, the private sector and community partners. Our reports cover key data about the university’s accountability and performance.

National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE)

This report provides an overview of the University of Toronto (U of T) findings from the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE). Survey results are used to identify the strengths of a U of T education and identify priorities for change. This survey is also used by all Ontario universities and Canadian peer universities to measure the quality of undergraduate education.

Common University Data Ontario (CUDO)

Ontario’s universities have worked together to develop and compile data to create CUDO, and to let students, parents and the public have ready access to information about each university.

What kind of information can I find on CUDO?

CUDO offers key data, in a common format, about Ontario’s universities:

  • Number of degrees awarded, student enrollment and entering averages – all by program;
  • Student satisfaction;
  • First-year tuition and ancillary fees by program;
  • Undergraduate class size, by year level;
  • Research awards granted; and
  • Graduation rates and employment rates by program.

CUDO has been designed to provide data that has been gathered on a consistent basis.

Council of Ontario Finance Officers (COFO) data

An affiliate of the Council of Ontario Universities, COFO prepares an annual financial report on sector financial details that extends the sector’s commitment to transparency and accountability, by augmenting the publishing of audited financial statements by member institutions.

The Report is comprised of tables that have been compiled from submissions prepared by each publicly-assisted university and its affiliated and federated institutions.

The financial information is categorized according to major fund groups: operating, ancillary, sponsored research, trust, capital and endowment, and captured in static and customized reports. The static and customized reports contain the same underlying data.

Static reports present the data in prescribed tables, whereas customized reports can be generated by users as desired, e.g. time-series analyses and institutional comparisons. An instruction manual is available to guide readers on how to produce customized reports.

Council of Ontario Universities - Inventory of Physical Facilities

The triennial Inventory of Physical Facilities of Ontario Universities reports on how much space universities actually have compared to standards that outline how much space is required for its operations, including classrooms, labs, student spaces and so on. This 2019-20 report highlights the continuing trend that universities are using the space they have efficiently, but that the growth in students continues to outpace the growth in physical space. Universities continue to adapt and modify space to meet the changing needs of students, staff and faculty. Universities are achieving efficiencies by increasing collaborative, multi-purpose and short-term spaces, both when new space is being built and when existing buildings are undergoing major renovations.

Higher Education Quality Council of Ontario

HEQCO’s evidence-based work goes beyond producing research publications. HEQCO has developed a range of tools and resources aimed at providing relevant, research focused materials for those with an interest in some of the important issues facing postsecondary education. These include issue specific looks at sustainability or work integrated learning, consortia of institutions across the province working to improve access and learning outcomes assessment and a compendium of data on Ontario’s postsecondary system.
