We are looking for two highly motivated and enthusiastic students to perform graduate research on: 1) the effects of multiple stressors on the sensory physiology of marine animals (fish and crabs) funded by an NSERC Discovery Grant; or 2) the role of hydrogen sulfide on the ageing process of vertebrates funded through a Connaught New Researcher Fund; other project options are also available. Research in the Porteus lab is integrative in nature combining molecular and cellular biology with whole animal studies using a variety of techniques including electrophysiology, immunohistochemistry, behavioural assays, and transcriptomics. Students will benefit from newly refurbished lab and aquatic facilities.

Consistent with the values and objectives in that plan, applications from Indigenous Peoples, Black and racialized persons, women, persons with disabilities, and people of diverse sexual and gender identities are strongly encouraged.

Qualifications: Candidates should have a BSc or MSc in comparative physiology or related field (or be in the process of completing one) and excellent academic qualifications. Exceptional BSc students will be considered for direct entry to a PhD if minimum requirements for program entry are met and they have research experience. The graduate appointment will be made through the Department of Cell and Systems Biology (CSB) at the University of Toronto (see website for CSB requirements).

How to apply: Interested students should submit a cover letter, CV, unofficial transcripts and the names of two referees to Dr. Cosima Porteus (cosima.porteus@utoronto.ca). Preference will be given to Canadian citizens and permanent residents, although non-citizens are also encouraged to apply (there are limited spots for non-Canadians/permanent residents in the CSB grad program, making admission more competitive than for Canadians/permanent residents). Anticipated Start Date: Fall 2023; Application deadline: January 31st, 2023. An initial screening of applications will be performed and shortlisted students will be invited for an interview (via Zoom in early February). Selected applicants will be asked to apply to the CSB graduate program (an application fee will be required at that time). Please get in touch via email if you have questions before applying.
