Groups for Winter 2023

UTSC Health & Wellness Centre offers three types of Health & Wellness group sessions. 
Please see the mental health and wellness focused groups and workshops facilitated by Counsellor/Therapists and Peer Supporters here:

Register for all groups via CLNx.

  1. Mental Health Workshops. These workshops are educational in approach.  They provide information and support to cope and improve your well-being and better understand mental health surrounding various topics and issues.
  2. Drop-in Groups. Participants are encouraged to engage throughout the session. These groups focus on developing and improving self-care strategies. Participants may join these groups at any point throughout the series, weekly registration is required.
  3. Therapy Groups. Weekly attendance is mandatory, and an intake assessment is required. The student must reside in Ontario due to governmental regulations. Therapy groups help change attitudes, behaviour and habits that may be unhelpful; and promote more constructive and adaptive ways of coping.

This group will provide support and assistance to students with ADHD in understanding and developing their self-regulation abilities, particularly executive functioning skills. Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is a goal-oriented, short-term style of psychotherapy that tries to transform these negative thought patterns and improve the way people deal with procrastination, disorganization, poor time management, emotional dysregulation, impulsivity, and inconsistent motivation. A variety of methods will be used, including handouts, short videos and practice using skills. 

The same participants will be meeting weekly over 8 sessions.  Registration is open until group reaches capacity.   Participants will be required to register with the Health & Wellness Centre to participate in this group.

Type: Therapy Group – Hybrid

This DBT informed group will introduce participants to skills they can use to manage their reactions to stress and emotions.  At each rolling admission week participants will be oriented to the upcoming materials including distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness skills.  A variety of methods will be used including handouts, short videos and practice using skills.

This group offers an informal, safe and healing space where we can come together to explore points of connection in our experience as BIPOC women, and have open candid conversations where we can learn from one another as we explore topics such as: inter-generational trauma and intergenerational resiliency; Body image; Self Care; Boundaries; Social Media & Mental Health; Decolonizing our minds; re-claiming spaces and places and other exciting topics important to you! 

In partnership with SCSU and the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Office.

Type: Group Therapy 

Location: SL266

In this four-week Mindful Awareness group, students will learn about Mindfulness, as in present moment awareness as a tool to develop skills in emotion regulation and self-compassion. Whether students are new to or have experience with Mindfulness, this group will provide skills in developing this new addition to their toolkit for wellness. 
 
The sessions are informed by the Mindful Awareness Stabilization Training (MAST) program and are structured based on the following four topics: (1) Mindfulness and the Window of Tolerance, (2) Mindfulness and the Brain, (3) Mindfulness and Emotions, and (4) Developing an Action Plan for Self Care. Sessions will provide psycho-education on Mindfulness as a tool for wellness in everyday life, and introduce students to various formal and informal mindfulness practices. 
 
Note: Depending on student interest in the group, there may be opportunity for a second round of these sessions later in the semester, or for the group to be transformed into a longer and more structured mindfulness-based CBT group.

Type: Drop-In in-person Group - requires registration on CLNx for planning art supplies and activities
Location: SL266

Creativity can be an important means of supporting our overall wellness. Accessing our creativity offers us another outlet for expression and helps us to make sense of some of the challenges we may be experiencing in new ways. Join us in this unique therapeutic art group as we come together to tap into our creativity through art, crafts, writing, movement, and more to create and explore new possibilities for wellness. This group offers a space to practice letting go of expectations, perfectionism, and comparisons. Whether you consider yourself to be a creative person, or you're simply curious to explore new ways of engaging in self-care, join us as all are welcome!

Type of Group: Drop-In in-person (no registration needed) and remote (needs registration on CLNx to obtain link to join)
Location: SL266

This support drop-in group will invite students that identify as members of the 2SLGBTQ+ community to have a weekly wellness conversation on Mondays from 2:30 pm to 3:30 pm. One of the monthly sessions, there will be proposal to invite a guest speaker from community organizations, the Positive Space Committee and other affiliate departments to allow for a holistic approach to community support. There will be a blend of structured sessions with panel discussions, guest speakers and lesson plans - and less structured sessions that will allow for community development. 

After attending one of the sessions, students will have the opportunity to learn to:  

  • Build community within the UTSC community through connections with campus partners, fellow peers and community organizations. 
  • Identify resources available that are tailored towards supporting 2SLGBTQ+ health. 
  • Engage in meaningful dialogue that seeks to engage in the dimensions of wellness through the rotation of weekly topics that will guide the conversation.

Watching a film with conscious awareness can help us identify and understand our core beliefs and can assist in altering and challenging our thoughts. Join us for a bi-weekly viewing and discussion of Popular Movie clips through a cognitive- behavior therapy lens.  Students will leave each session with increased emotional awareness, insights, and inspiration.    

This group is being offered in person and virtually.  If you are dropping in, no registration required.  If you are planning to join remotely, please register on CLNx. The Counsellor facilitating will email you one day prior to this workshop with the Microsoft Teams or Zoom link to join.   Registration closes at 8am the day prior to the group.

Facilitators: Peer Support Team

This drop-in group is facilitated by students who have been trained in peer support skills and mental health. This group is ideal for students that want to talk about experiences of mental health, learn different coping strategies, and learn about available resources on campus. 
 
No registration required for Wednesdays.  Just drop by SL266.

Facilitator: Wellness Navigation Advisor, JE

This workshop will provide mental health and wellbeing resources within campus as well as in the community.  This includes navigating online to locate services.  Each workshop will end with a review of coping skills.

This workshop will provide students with practical tools to navigate relationships. The discussion will include communication and boundaries.
