UTSC 17 Rooms Event

UTSC 17 Rooms Event

What are the 17 Rooms?

The 17 Rooms is a unique format to advance the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The first 17 Rooms initiative was launched by The Brookings Institute and The Rockefeller Foundation in September 2018 as an experiment to stimulate new forms of action for the 17 SDGs.

The 17 rooms are for the 17 UN SDGs- each room will be dedicated to an SDG where conversation and discussion will be centered around that one SDG.

Participate in the discussion on campus around Sustainability!

This virtual event centers conversations with students and all members of our campus community including students, faculty and staff to impact the conversation about sustainability and what opportunities there are at UTSC for each SDG. Students from all disciplines of study are encouraged to participate as sustainability is an intersectional topic.

If you are interested in volunteering to help administer the event, please email sustainability.utsc@utoronto.ca

Date/Time: Wednesday October 27, 2021, 2:30 pm to 5:00pm

Location: Online, ZOOM

Registration for the event will close on October 25, 2021 at 12:00 pm (noon).

How will the 17-Rooms event work?

This will be a virtual event conducted on the Zoom Meetings platform using the breakout room function to create the 17 “Zoom Rooms”. We will kick off the event with an introductory address to put into context the SDGs at UTSC. From there we will break out into the 17-rooms for about 1 hour where participants will discuss opportunities for the SDGs at UTSC based on their assigned room. Each room will be moderated by a UTSC faculty member. After returning to the main room, each room will provide a brief 2 minute summary of their discussion before the concluding address. These discussions will provide valuable insight into opportunities at UTSC and foster connections on campus.

Do I need to prepare?

Be prepared to actively participate! This event is a unique chance to share your insight on sustainability at UTSC and explore connections on campus. Everyone has a valuable perspective to share so please participate as fully as you can in the discussion.

This event is for everyone, no matter your knowledge on the SDGs. However, it is recommended that you review the Sustainable Development Goals , specifically for the room you are interested in, for a more meaningful conversation including the Targets and Indicators.

How can I sign up for one of the 17-Rooms?

All members of the UTSC community are welcome to attend this event including students, faculty and staff. The room will consist of a moderator, event volunteers, and invited guests and student participants. To encourage fruitful and meaningful conversation, there will be a limited number of spots for each room.

Upon registration, please indicate which SDG room you’d like to sign up for. The Registration Page will ask which three SDGs you would prefer to discuss. If the room you would like to attend is full we will do our best to place you in one of your top 3 preferred rooms.

Why should I participate?

The SDGs are an important framework to engage with sustainability on campus. This event is a great way to connect with like-minded campus community members and find new collaborators! The opportunity to participate in the 17-Rooms format is unique and exciting.

This event will also be eligible for a CCR opportunity with confirmation of attendance and a completed reflection.

When is it?
