The Anita Fitzgerald Prize in Women's and Gender Studies:
Submission Deadline: Wednesday, May 5, 3:00 pm.
This monetary prize is for the best written work (i.e.an essay or report) or project (i.e. in other media) by a UTSC student taking a course in any of the programs in HCS (Women’s & Gender Studies, African Studies, Classical Studies, Global Asia Studies, Food Studies and History). The work must have been submitted for a course assignment during the academic year 2020- 2021. For this year’s Prize this includes courses in Summer 2020, Fall 2020 or Winter 2021. It must be on a topic related to Women's and Gender Studies such as (but not limited to) some aspect of gender, intersectional inequalities, women's roles, activities and experiences, forms of expression, and/or the development and transmission of ideas and attitudes about women and/or gender, or the concerns and problems of women today or in the past.
Eligible assignments and projects must have been submitted as part of course work in the 2020-2021 academic year (2020 Summer; 2020 Fall, 20201 Winter) and must have been worth at least 20% of the course grade.
The process has changed from previous years.We are now asking instructors to identify the 1-2 strongest assignments in each of their courses and to reach out to those students to invite them to submit their work. This new process allows us to have greater control over the quality of submitted work. Note: It is not necessary to recommend any work. It’s absolutely fine if you feel there isn’t a superlative assignment to put forward!
Here’s the process:
Step 1: Reach Out to Student(s)
- a) Each instructor to identify 1-2 of the strongest assignments in each of their courses. Again note you may decide that there are no appropriate assignments. Or perhaps there is no such assignment worth 20% of the final grade.
- b) Instructor should reach out to the student and invite them to submit their assignment (essay/project) in its original form.
Step 2: Students submits work to hcs-ca@utsc.utoronto.ca
- c) The student needs to submit their work directly, so please share the following information with them. Deadline for receipt of submissions is Wednesday, May 5, 3:00. Submissions must be sent as a word attachment to Kamal Hassan, hcs-ca@utsc.utoronto.ca They must use subject line: Fitzgerald Prize

If you are reaching out to a student to submit a creative work (ie digital/media projects, portfolios), please contact c.guberman@utoronto.ca and we’ll figure out the appropriate process.
Step 3: Instructor brief statement by May 12
- The student needs to let you know they have submitted their work, so that you can then follow up with a brief statement (max100 words) on a) the originality of the essay or project; b) the amount of supervision and/or editorial assistance the student received; and c) confirm the percentage of the course's workload this essay or project represented. These instructor statement should be sent to Kamal Hassan and hcs-ca@utsc.utoronto.ca by Thursday, May 12. Please use subject line: Fitzgerald Prize [last name of student]
