ENGC82

Course Name: Topics in Cinema Studies

Instructor: Matthew Stoddard

Course Description: This course will look at a selection of fiction, documentary, and experimental Canadian films from across the past fifty years. Our focus will be on issues of identity and cultural difference. Readings and discussions will explore how these films express the complex realities of class, ethnicity, gender, and sexuality in contemporary Canada, and how they may in turn complicate our ideas of nation and national cinema. Assignments will include an academic essay as well as informal reflective writing.

Course films include:

I've Heard the Mermaids Singing (Rozema, 1987)

Kanehsatake: 270 Years of Resistance (Obomsawin, 1993)

Incendies (Villeneuve, 2010)

Laurence Anyways (Dolan, 2012)

The Body Remembers When the World Broke Open (Tailfeathers & Hepburn, 2019)

...and others
