Welcome to the CTL English Language Development Support

Winter 2021 ELD Supports

The English Language Development (ELD) Support for Winter 2021 is fully online so students can get help and support no matter where you are located during the pandemic.

3 types of support are available:

  1. Reading and Writing Excellence (RWE) program: Personalized support from expert writing instructors to help students develop the academic reading and critical thinking skills as well as write to meet university-level expectations.

UPDATE: Registration for the Winter RWE program has closed.  If you would like to receive an alert from us to enable you to sign up for the Summer (May 2021) RWE session, please complete this form [CLICK HERE]

  2. ELD Consultations: Confidential one-on-one virtual consultation. Book a consultation [here]. Instructions on how to book an ELD Consultation can be found on the ELD Support Consultation page [here].

  3. Online English Discussion Circles:
Looking to improve your speaking skills?

Speaking with professors, presenting in front of class, working in groups, or discussing ideas with classmates are important parts of university life – even online. But these opportunities can also increase feelings of nervousness for students, particularly as there are few opportunities to practice English when we are all working virtually.

Online English Discussion Circles offer a welcoming environment for undergraduate students who are looking to connect with other students, discuss interesting topics, and build skills and confidence in their English language conversation and oral, academic communication skills. Instructor-facilitated sessions are supported by friendly student peers and limited in size to ensure everyone can participate.

    Schedule of Workshops (Winter 2021):
    DISCUSSION CIRCLE #1

    Register for this session: https://utoronto.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZUvfuiqrDkpHNLATz2SH6kWqqD_n_...
Description: We know you belong at UTSC, but where is UTSC when Covid 19 has made us join class remotely from all over the world? What are the connections and rituals that make us local to UTSC, whether we've spent a few years on campus or have yet to set foot on it. This peer supported discussion group offers lots of opportunity to practice speaking as you converse with your peers, while also providing instructor guidance on strategies to improve your speaking in a university setting.

Description: Improve your confidence and your presentations. This online interactive session is designed to help you improve your presentations skills. Our goal is not to build the best presenter, (and there is no need to worry that you will be asked to present in front of a large group at any session.) The goal of this session is all about getting you comfortable and working towards improving your confidence and communication.

    DISCUSSION CIRCLE #4
    Date
: Wednesday, February 10th, 9-10AM (Toronto Eastern Standard Time)
Topic: How to Connect, Stand out – Even Online
    Register for this session: https://utoronto.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZApf-urpj4qE9LwVVTF4dm6i-pG2q...
