National Day of Remembrance & Action On Violence Against Women

This day was established in 1991 to mark the anniversary of the murder of women in 1989 at l’École Polytechnique de Montréal. On December 6, 1989, a murderer entered the l’École Polytechnique, separated the men from the women and, declaring his hatred for feminists, killed 14 women. The solemn ceremony acknowledged the gender-driven disparities that still exist today and featured the artwork, poetry, and reflections of UTSC community members honouring the women lost in Montréal and women all over the world who are treated inequitably simply for being women.
