Post Placement Spotlight: Shruti Anandan in Kenya

From June 2017 to April 2018, Shruti completed her placement in Nairobi, Kenya. Shruti’s interest in global education motivated her to secure a placement with the Networks of Quality, Teaching and Learning (TL_net)  at Aga Khan University (AKU).

During her placement, Shruti supported in organizing and planning 4 faculty development workshops, 2 teaching and learning seminars, and 1 Scholarship of Teaching and Learning conference for the staff at AKU. She also co-authored the Annual Report for the department and worked towards enhancing their communications strategy by designing newsletters and creating multimedia content. Shruti’s thesis research explores how a Canadian model of faculty development called the Rethinking Teaching Workshop caters to the needs of faculty in Global South countries namely in Kenya, Tanzania, and Pakistan.

During her placement, Shruti received the opportunity to deliver a speech and network with the senior leadership at AKU. Along with fellow interns, Shruti also participated in a media project undertaken by the International Internship Programme. Shruti describes her placement as a true learning experience because it allowed her to step out of her comfort zone and enhance her creative, communications, and research skills. She had the opportunity to get involved with multiple research projects undertaken by her department which allowed her to expand her knowledge base. During her spare time, Shruti engaged in various outdoor and indoor activities including dance classes, gymming, and hiking.
