Call for Abstracts

Forum for Critical Chinese Qualitative Research
Special Interest Group in
13th International Congress on Qualitative Inquiry

After its establishment in 2015, the Forum invites interested practitioners to advance the community. At the individual level, the Forum provides a platform for qualitative practitioners at all stages of their careers to present their work, receive feedbacks, and bring one’s work into fruition. Collectively, the Forum is to establish and advance critical Chinese qualitative research. We will use the following thematic topics to organize the 2nd pre-conference, May 17, 2017:

(1) On the teaching of critical Chinese qualitative research:

  • How has/have qualitative method course(s) been taught in your institution?
  • What have been the challenges in teaching such course(s)?
  • What have been accomplished by teaching such course(s)?
  • What can be learned from the experiences?
  • What does “critical” qualitative research mean in the local contexts?
  • How to develop and/or advance curriculum of critical qualitative research?

(2) On the learning of critical qualitative research:

  • How have you learned qualitative research?
  • What have been the challenges in the learning of qualitative research?
  • How have such challenges been addressed?
  • What does “critical” qualitative research mean to you in your learning?
  • What can be learned from the experiences?
  • How to advance “critical” qualitative research from the front of learning?

(3) On social science inquiry:

  • What issues/topics have been investigated by social scientists, Chinese diasporas, and sinologists over the last decades?
  • How such investigations have been carried out methodologically and/or epistemologically?
  • What have been the findings?
  • What issues can be raised by examining the trajectory of social science inquiry in and/or about China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan?

(4) On indigenization of critical Chinese qualitative research:

  • What questions/issues are you currently working on?
  • What answers have been provided by existing scholarship, especially originated from the West?
  • How is the scholarship accomplished methodologically and/or epistemologically?
  • How is it applicable and/or inapplicable to the questions/issues you are working on, presumably in the Chinese context?
  • How to build upon and/or depart from the existing scholarship in the Chinese context?

Submissions should include both an English (150-word) and Chinese (300-word) abstract. The actual paper can be either in English or Chinese.

Authors of papers accepted for presentation at the pre-conference will be notified a few weeks after the submission deadline. Completed papers submitted/circulated by April 30, 2017 are eligible for consideration for the best paper award on the grounds of methodological, epistemological, and theoretical contributions to critical Chinese qualitative research. The award will be announced at the pre-conference.

Presentation and discussion at the pre-conference can be in English or Chinese. They will take the forms of presentation by the author, critiquing among participants, and brainstorming for result dissemination.

Participants of the Pre-conference can enroll in workshops on qualitative methods (May 18). You also have free access to the 12th International Congress of Qualitative Inquiry (May 19th-20th).
