Campus Open Spaces

Project: The Terrace

Date Occupied: Fall 2017

Description: At the centre of the south campus a barren concrete quad was transformed through ‘tactical urbanism’ to provide a welcoming and vibrant outdoor space. This project used a simple and affordable kit of parts including large planters and paint to define active and passive space and flexible furniture that may be arranged for a variety of uses.

Project: ARC Quad (DTAH with DCM Project Management)

Date Occupied: Summer 2022

Description: The ARC Quad is the first pilot space expression of the UTSC Landscape and Public Realm Master Plan (see link in Campus Planning). The space will support our community with options to gather within renewed outdoor space that includes new planting and trees, lighting, seating with integrated power and canopies for summer heat mitigation. Wooden bridge elements allow for greater areas of soil volume on site to support healthy plant communities that in-turn support and enrich the regeneration of the soils with the aim of a self-regulating system. This project, and others that follow will allow the campus to take a leadership role in the study and development of soils performance standards and landscape management practices using the campus as a learning landscape.

The project was partially funded by a City of Toronto Urban Forestry Greening Partnership grant that supports the augmentation of tree canopy within publicly accessible private spaces.

Project: Valley Trail (Schollen Landscape Architects with DCM Project Management)

Date Occupied: Fall 2019

Description: The Valley Trail provides a safe and accessible pathway from  the upper campus, descending 19 meters into the ravine below. The path, intentionally meandering to mitigate impact to existing trees and sensitive landscape elements provides extraordinary vistas from elevated sections, intimate landing spots and larger gathering spaces. Native and edible plants, shrubs and trees have been carefully chosen to complement campus research, teaching and environmental goals.
