Transfer Credit Assessment Guide

This transfer credit assessment guide is intended as a reference for students who have received their post-secondary transfer credit results.

 

Your transfer credit assessment will include:

  • U of T Scarborough credits that you may be awarded based on the review of your previous post-secondary studies (pending final documentation)

  • Courses that did not qualify for transfer credit

  • Courses which are still under review

  • Courses that you should not enroll in at U of T Scarborough

  • Your year of study, outstanding documents required, and next steps

This guide will help you understand your transfer credit results and how to get more help.

Begin by choosing the U of T Scarborough credit type on your assessment

Specified credits are granted for courses with significant overlap to a course offered at U of T Scarborough. In this example, Calculus I from Queen's University is equivalent to MATA30H3 and will fulfill the Quantitative Reasoning breadth requirement.

This transfer credit has a credit weight of 0.5 or half credit.

Please refer to the course information and exclusions for all specified courses you have been awarded and any course exclusions on your assessment in the U of T Scarborough Academic Calendar.

 

How to use a specified credit:

Specified credits can be used towards your program and/or degree requirements.

This will be applied automatically to your student record and degree plan.

Unspecified credits are granted for courses with no exact equivalent at U of T Scarborough, and may be used to meet program prerequisites as long as permission is obtained from the relevant program advisor.

In this example, Introduction to Cognitive Science from Queen's University is equivalent to PSYA**H and will fulfill the Natural Sciences breadth requirement.

This transfer credit has a credit weight of 0.5 or half credit.

Unspecified credits are counted towards your overall degree and breadth requirements, and may be used to meet program prerequisites.

Unspecified credits are not automatically applied towards the courses required for your program of study.

Generic credits are granted when no exact equivalent discipline exists at U of T Scarborough.

In this example, the content of the course Chemistry and Materials from Queen's University is not equivalent to any course content taught at U of T Scarborough, but it contains sufficient academic content in Natural Sciences to award a credit. It will fulfill the NatSci breadth requirement.

This transfer credit has a credit weight of 1.0 or a full credit.

Generic credits are divided into 4 main types:

  • HUM (Humanities)
  • SSC (Social Science)
  • SCI (Science)
  • USP (No category)

 

How to use a generic credit:

Generic credits are counted towards your overall degree requirements, and may be used to meet a breadth requirements. If a breadth category is listed in your assessment, as in the example above, it can be used to meet the breadth requirement.

Generic credits are not automatically applied towards the courses required for your program of study.

Within the overall 20.0 credits required to complete your degree, students must complete 0.5 credits from each of the following course categories:

  • Arts, Literature & Language (Arts)
  • History, Philosophy & Cultural studies (HisPhil)
  • Social & Behavioural Sciences (SocBeh)
  • Natural Sciences (NatSci)
  • Quantitative Reasoning (Quant)

Equivalent: Equivalent credits are courses that were transferred successfully to U of T Scarborough.

Exclusion: U of T Scarborough courses listed as exclusions overlap with a transfer credit that was granted. You may not enroll in courses listed as exclusions.

Extra: Courses listed as Extra do not count towards the your GPA or your degree requirements. Approval from the program advisor is required in order for students to enroll in Extra credits.

Retained: Courses from your previous studies at another U of T campus may be retained on your transcript.

The transfer credit assessment is a mandatory part of your admission.

Students are not allowed to forfeit post-secondary transfer credits that have been granted.

Information about high school transfer credits including eligibility and forfeiting is available on the High School & Secondary Curriculum page.

Your transfer credits from post-secondary schools outside of University of Toronto will be listed on your U of T transcript with transfer credit course code, breadth requirement and course weight. No grade information is listed.

The original mark you received for the course will not be reflected or used to calculate your cumulative GPA at U of T.

Course grades from U of T courses completed at other campuses will be retained and reflected on your transcript and GPA.

Any courses that you will be completing during the summer at your original institution prior to starting at U of T Scarborough in the Fall must be included on your transfer credit application. If you do not have the final grades for your summer courses at the time of your transfer credit application, please indicate the final grade as "IP" for in progress.
